Letter: South Central praiseworthy, too

Sunday, November 08, 2009

After reading your Oct. 31 article about the South Central-D.H. Conley soccer game, I felt an obligation to respond. We as Americans should be able to count on news reporting to be somewhat objective by reporting each side of the story, game, etc. and allowing the reader to form a mental image and/or an opinion on their own. Your article was far from objective.

Your 12-paragraph article read like a Conley biography. Yes, Conley played very well, but what about the South Central boys? Where were the positive comments about South Central? Did South Central not make any “super” plays? Did the goalie not “pounce” on any shots? Did Patrick Fechter not lead his team up and down the field like the Conley players? Did you write about how a South Central player was injured by the cleats of a Conley player to the point of having to be carried off the field, and received a yellow card? (Why, we are still asking ourselves.) Did the article state how the lead referee called a one-sided game, which leads to the game being out of control, therefore ending the game early?

Are you aware that many of the South Central and D.H. Conley players are together in other leagues throughout the county and throughout the school year? Most of those boys know each other, travel with each other and socialize with each other.

I believe you need to wake up and realize these are children, some as young as 14 years old. Your article made me feel as though South Central is not worthy of any accolades. How do you think the South Central players felt? Are they not as worthy as D.H. Conley? If not, why? South Central is a Pitt County high school too. Sadly, The Daily Reflector needs to grasp the concept that Pitt County has six high schools, not two.

Probably too busy writing about SC football. You guys stomp Conley in football, you can't expect to get all the press all the time.

Here may be the answer

Why was nothing positive about South Central in the article? "Falcons coach Crystal Molina declined comment after the game." When the coach declines to talk to the press after the game, you can not expect a favorable outcome in the paper. If the coach declines to talk after a shutout loss, who should the reporter interview? The letter writer who trotted out the "sour grapes at the ref" lines?

Ouch! Thank you for not mentioning that terrible mean ole Rose for once. Yes, sometimes it may seem one sided but it's not intentional. I've reported baseball info to them before and my impressions have been very good. Regardless of the article someone will be bummed if they don't mention little "Johnny". They do the very best they can w/ the info they have available. It's not personal. The next time the other side will be complaining. Been there myself.
