Letter: Afghanistan quagmire far reaching

2 Comments | Leave a Comment

Our quagmire in Afghanistan is a war with ill-defined gains, absolute tragedy for our soldiers and an anathema to the Afghan people. We have seen the video of the Marines in Afghanistan urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has taken great umbrage at this behavior and promises a full investigation.

Well, while the great investigation is on, let’s take a serious look at just why these young Americans are in Afghanistan and, while we are at it, let’s take an even closer look at the impact that this war is having on the psyche of our American soldiers.

This behavior is wrong, but I am not loading too many stones into my sack of disgust until I am sure that I could stand toe to toe with those soldiers and take a higher ground. I feel certain that not one of these soldiers had ever considered doing such a dastardly act when he was state bound and family and friends secure. This war is doing something terrible to the hearts, minds, bodies and souls of our warriors. Too many are slowly losing their grip on the kind of individuals they once were. If they ever get out of there, can they reclaim their dignity, integrity and moral compass? Their loved ones surely would like to know. These soldiers would too.

Obama said this was the good war...

Obama's children are to young to go to war....sorry!

War is a racket, not to be won, but to be sustained

Blessed are the peacemakers. If God is Love, then war must be the opposite. What brought us to this point is a twisted geopolitical ungodly strategy of arming the resistance to the Soviet occupation, which morphed into the Taliban and resulted in al Qaeda, which blew back in our face. We've made the same mistakes over & over. Remember when we propped up te Shah, which resulted in the hostage crisis and the revolution, which handed Iran over to the mullahs. Or how about when we armed and propped up Hussein, who we then had to spend a trillion dollars deposing in our 'shock and awe' strategy, in the most expensive manhunt in history. How many lives were lost as a result of that brilliant strategy? I love the idea of self-rule, but in regions that have been in tribal warfare for millennia, imposing democracy at the point of a gun is just misguided. One man one vote in some areas would elect a bin Laden type, and we just have no idea how foreign to us Islamic tradition is. We should have just left people to their own ways, and stayed out of their land, which they consider holy. We go tramping in with our guns and bombs and bullets, and wonder why they kill us. How would we like some country deciding that we need a 'regime change', and invade & occupy us, setting up armed checkpoints, like we did in Iraq & Iran? Putting the shoe on the other foot isn't so pretty. And for what? Oil, in the case of Iraq? Or a threat to us as in the case of Iran, which we were responsible for existing in the first place? Calling it a quagmire is an insult to quagmires. There should be a law that if/when Congress and the President sends our finest off to fight and die, their adult children will be subject to a draft by lottery to fight, that would end frivolous and unwise conflicts.
