After reading Chris Fitzsimon's column in the April 18 Reflector, I felt like throwing my hands in the air and saying, “What's next on the Republican agenda, total anarchy?”
It has become painfully apparent that the Republicans hate any form of federal government. President Ronald Reagan himself said something like, “Government is the problem.” The U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., budget proposal for 2012 aims to, or at least begin to, dismantle Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as we know it, handing over the management of all social programs to the individual states.
That includes the dismantling of all federal programs to protect the air, soil, water, forests, highways, national parks and the environment and all programs to protect consumers from inferior or dangerous food and drugs. These are just starters in the quest to banish federal government in any form. Roads would not be the only change in store for citizens as they cross state lines. Well, if all this comes to pass, we could depend on our state government to provide some of the needed protection. Not so.
