CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Tenth-ranked Virginia hammered East Carolina's baseball team, 10-1, in the first of a three-game series Friday at UVa.
The Cavaliers scored nine runs — three earned — off Pirate starter Seth Maness, who lasted only 31/3 innings while allowing nine hits and striking out three.
Virginia's Danny Hultzen turned in a dazzling performance on the mound and at the plate for the Cavs. Hultzen recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts while scattering three hits and allowing one run in seven innings of work en route to the win. After allowing a leadoff single to Trent Whithead, Hultzen retired 19 consecutive ECU batters.
