A fastball got in Zach Wright's way with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday, and he made it disappear.

Just minutes before Wright unloaded a walk-off home run for East Carolina against Memphis, the Pirates appeared destined to let their first Conference USA series of the season slip away. ECU had already dropped the first game of a doubleheader on a chilly afternoon, 3-2, but the Pirates unleashed a three-run salvo in the series finale, securing a 5-3 win and claiming the series, two games to one.

“There are a lot of ways you can win, and that was about as dramatic as you can get,” said ECU head coach Billy Godwin, whose team awoke from an all-day hibernation at the perfect time. “At the end of the year when the committee and everybody starts looking at (which teams will receive regional invitations), they talk about how many series did you win.”
