ECU victory has local flair

East Carolina's dramatic comeback win against Memphis late Saturday afternoon had eastern North Carolina's signature scrawled across it.

Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, and with a three-game Conference USA series on the line, ECU unleashed a three-run storm on the Tigers to claim a 5-3 victory and a 2-1 series win.


A couple guys from farther west got ECU's electricity buzzing — reliever Seth Simmons (Lewisville) riled up his teammates with a three-strikeout top of the ninth and Corey Thompson (Apex) reached on an infield error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch — before the local boys made good.
