Jeff Hoffman completed his first season as East Carolina baseball’s ace pitcher in late May and rested for about a month before heading to the prestigious Cape Cod League for what he knew was only going to be four starts.

Those four starts resulted in four wins for Hoffman’s Hyannis (Mass.) Harbor Hawks, an All-Star selection for Hoffman and the Pirates’ right-hander set to return to Greenville in the coming weeks brimming with confidence.

One of Hoffman’s starts was a clunker — he allowed eight runs in 32⁄3 innings on July 10 in an eventual 10-8 win by the Hawks — but the other three were outstanding. During those appearances, he allowed two combined runs with 29 strikeouts and three walks in 202⁄3 frames.
