A new quarterback had to emerge on the East Carolina football team this season, and that’s already happened.
A new personality might have come along with it. Junior Rio Johnson threw for 242 yards and accounted for three ECU touchdowns in his debut Saturday, a 35-13 rout of Appalachian State, but Johnson’s calm, cool attitude stood out beyond his throws.
“I like the fact that on the sideline Rio was calm,” ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill said of Johnson’s first career start. “He never wavered. On the field he was able to take any kind of adjustments that (offensive coordinator) Lincoln (Riley) made. He ran the team efficiently.”
