ELON — Trent Whitehead scrambled home on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th inning Tuesday night to give the East Carolina baseball team another one-run victory in a season already filled with them, 4-3 over Elon.

The Pirates had squandered leads of 1-0 and 3-2 to be forced into extra innings by the host Phoenix, but in the 10th, Whitehead doubled with one out, and advanced two bases to home plate thanks to consecutive wild pitches by Elon reliever Mitch Conner.

After taking over for starter Shawn Armstrong in the second inning, ECU reliever Kevin Brandt kept Elon at bay while his own team surged into the lead, 3-2, but it was Brandt's runner who came home to tie the game in the eighth inning. Closer Seth Simmons took over from there, pitching through the ninth to earn the win before Jake Harris took the hill in the 10th and notched the save.
