Report: Recruit told Pirates in 'holding pattern'

The Daily Reflector

Monday, October 06, 2008

Apparently, the national ranking in front of East Carolina's name for three weeks earlier this football season really did carry some weight.

According to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, an ECU recruit was told recently that the Pirates were not taking any new commitments at the present time because of the recent flood of interest coming the Pirates' way.

Trey Smith, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound wide receiver at Perry High School, was reportedly told the Pirates' upset wins over nationally ranked Virginia Tech and West Virginia to open the 2008 season had left them in a “holding pattern” because of the wave of recruiting attention it generated.

Smith, who is also being tailed by Marshall, Ball State, Akron and Kent State, said ECU coaches told him to be patient, and that his offer would still be on the table before February's national signing day.

I am sorry, but that is crap. ECU is in the weakest conference in college football. Florida State would not even dream of playing ECU. When your QB can only throw 100 yards, while your defense gives up 621 offensive yards to any team ends all the buzz. Even when you beat #17 VT and #8 WVU ealier in the season. VT is back in the rankings at #18 after their season opener loss to ECU. Hell, even UNC is ranked #22. I like ECU because I live in Greenville, but go Tarheels!!!

The first three wins were a fluke, they cant even beat teams that have losing records. Why would anyone want to sign with this team.

sorry ecu and affiliated propaganda pushers, im not buying this story. get a great football club and you have this problem but the pirates had one season that they started 3-0 against horrible teams. there is no way this has drastically improved their enrollment. besides who would want to play football here. all real football is in big twelve

So, if this athlete has verbally committed to ECU, does this mean he has to "wait" until they decide whether or not they still want him? If this is true, then he needs to be looking at other schools and not worrying about ECU.
