WINTERVILLE — Kirsten Kelly and Jessica Sweers didn't get a lot of time to savor their final home match as members of the Pitt Community College volleyball team Tuesday.
That's because the Bulldogs needed just an hour to wrap up a 25-9, 25-10, 25-17 sweep of Region X rival Lenoir Community College.
Pitt's sophomore duo led the way with Sweers finishing with a team-high 15 assists, while Kelly led all players with 10 kills.
“Jessica has been our top setter all year long,” PCC coach Tom Marsh said. “She does an excellent job of putting the ball where she needs to. She won a state championship at D.H. Conley so it's good to see her stay here.
“And Kirsten came from a program that wasn't really good in volleyball, and she's improved tremendously. If I can get her to attack the ball like that, we've got a good shot to keep going.”
Not much was going to slow the Bulldogs (18-13) down against the Lancers.
After steadily building a big lead, Pitt closed out the first set with a 7-2 run. Natalie Salter had two aces down the stretch before Courtney Everette closed out the first game with a big block.
Sweers served up six straight points to start the second set and Pitt led comfortably throughout. Consecutive kills by Kelly and Morghan Stallings sealed a 25-10 victory.
The third and final set was the closest of the day and the only one in which the Lancers held a lead. LCC pulled ahead three times in the match — the last at 9-8 — before Pitt surged in front for good.
Holly Sears finished with seven kills for the Bulldogs, while Haley Galimore added five. Salter led the squad with seven digs.
Marsh was pleased with Pitt's play at the net, particularly early in the match.
“I want us to attack a lot of balls, and we did attack a lot of balls tonight, especially in the first two games,” Marsh said. “If we're going to win our conference tournament we've got to attack balls. You can't pitty-pat them back over.”
The Bulldogs will hit the road on Friday to take on Blue Ridge Community College and Spartanburg Methodist.
