John Sutherland, professor and chairman of the Department of Physics at East Carolina University, assumed his new role as interim dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences on July 1.
Sutherland came to ECU in 2001 and has spent 12 years as the chairman of physics.
Prior to his tenure at ECU, Sutherland taught and performed research for the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Physics; Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Department of Molecular Biology; University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; University of Southern California, Department of Chemistry; University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine’s Department of Physiology and Biophysics; and the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Bioscience Department. His tenure at Walter Reed was during a tour of active duty as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps.
