BEAR GRASS - Bear Grass Charter School's varsity boys basketball teams opened up the 2020-2021 season with a sweep over Hobgood Academy last week.

In their home opener on Tuesday (Jan. 5), the Bears rolled past the Raiders 76-34 in the boys' game.

Bear Grass trailed early (5-3) after a three-pointer from Hunter Rogers, but the home team went on a 14-0 run in the last four minutes (Logan Coltrain, Bryce Carlisle and Caleb Taylor) to grab a 17-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Hobgood was only able to cut the deficit to 10, and that was on a pair of free throws by Rogers with 5:08 left in the first half.

Carlisle hit a three-pointer and added a free throw, while Taylor and Coltrain added buckets to make it 26-12.

The Bear Grass defense also helped the offense by creating several turnovers and controlling the boards.

Taylor found Carlisle on the break following a turnover and then later hit a three-pointer for BGCS. Hobgood tried to stay with the Bears on baskets from Jordy Martinez and Rogers, but a rebound/basket by BG Jameson Perry put the home team up 35-21 at halftime.

A 9-0 flurry to start the third quarter gave Bear Grass Charter a 42-21 cushion, and the lead ballooned to 28 (59-31) at the end of the stanza with offense from Coltrain, Carlisle, Taylor and a buzzer-beating jumper by Jackson Ingalls.

Hobgood managed just three points in the final quarter, all on an old-fashioned three-point play by Martinez with 4:33 remaining.

Brandon Arrants, Austin Clinefelter, Shane Lanier, Taylor and Coltrain provided offense in the final eight minutes for Bear Grass Charter.

Coltrain (25 points), Taylor (17) and Carlisle (15) were the top scorers for Bear Grass Charter. Rogers led Hobgood with 17 points.

In Friday's game, the rematch between the teams was tighter but Bear Grass came away with a 45-38 victory on the road.

The Bears led 18-14 at halftime and used a 12-6 edge in the third stanza to expand the lead to 10 (30-20). The Raiders outscored the visitors 18-15 in the fourth quarter but came up short.
