A few weeks ago, I introduced you to the wonderful world of food trucks and over the next few months we are going to sink our teeth into great food and stories behind the food trucks that call Greenville home.

Searing is a technique used in grilling, baking and roasting that cooks the surface of food at a high temperature until a gorgeous brown crust forms. The technique is at the heart of Seared Chop House, 1909-A E. Fire Tower Road.

Feb. 9 is National Bagel Day, so now is the perfect time to talk bagels. It is estimated that over 200 million people consumed bagels in 2020. I wasn’t surprised by this statistic as I am one of the millions of people who eat bagels on a regular basis for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or wheneve…

Neon lights, swivel stools, Formica tables, dreamy Elvis Presley lyrics piped out of speakers and the hiss and whine of French fries cooking in hot oil. A huddle of boys laugh and smile while sipping orangeades and reminiscing about the baseball game and who cracked one out of the park. A ne…

When I think of the word rodeo, I think of sunshine, cowboy hats, horses, bulls and loads of fun. What if you added some amazing food trucks and scratch-made food? Now that is what I’m talking about. Over the next few months, I will have the pleasure of introducing you to many food trucks th…

When I think of incredible diner food, I always jump back to my childhood. My mom was constantly carting my brother and me to practice and school events and there wasn’t a lot of time for cooking. We frequented two small diners that both had neon signs and hugged busy main roads. One had sli…

The Rickhouse has been open for lunch since the summer but recently expanded its already impressive menu. General manager Jeremy Shelton along with manager Greer Jones and head chef Keisha Peterson have thought up incredible combinations and entrees combining flavors and textures that create…

It’s estimated that on average, Americans eat 3 billion pizzas per year, which breaks down to about 40 pizzas per person per year. From thin crust to thick crust to pepperoni to a smorgasbord of toppings, pizza is a dynamic and addictive dish for the masses. Pizza is a culinary symbol of uni…

Every day, on the way to work I travel across the river past the airport and an old Huddle House location that has been converted into a Mexican restaurant. Not just any Mexican restaurant, but Anita’s Authentic Mexican Street Food located at 1915 North Memorial Drive, in Greenville. If you …

I love how food has the ability to take us on a journey. It’s not just a journey with flavors, but with the process. This week we get to travel to the Dominican Republic to taste the sauce that has simmered for hours and the spice bouquets that bring fireworks of flavor to dishes paying trib…

Keeping our bodies healthy and in balance involves more than just diet and exercise. Many of us add supplements like protein shakes, vitamin regimens and plant based products. When we have aches and pains, we tend to reach for synthetic alternatives such as pain relievers and other medicines…

I don’t know about you, but the last three months have challenged my eating habits. I may or may not have gained a few unwanted pounds and made some unhealthy food choices. But there is hope. As we get ready for a new normal and a new school year, we need to go back to our food roots, exerci…

No matter what happens in the world, bad or good, there is one thing that will never change and that is, we need to eat. It’s a necessity and we want to eat food that is delicious and feeds our bodies and souls. If we can’t put the world back into harmony, we can at least put ourselves back …

The word family has taken on a whole new meaning this year as we navigate the unfamiliar terrain that is 2020. We are staying home more, gathering around the dinner table seeking safety and comfort in both family and food because these are two things we trust.

Summer is the perfect time to break out of your shell (pun intended) and enjoy seafood boils on the back deck with family, friends and a cold drink. Just line a big table with newspaper and “toss” all the boiled goodness in the center spilling crab legs, corn, sausage, shrimp and potatoes. J…

For the last 33 years, Greenville’s Ming Dynasty has been serving authentic Mandarin, Schezwan and Cantonese dishes as well as providing gluten free, low-fat, peanut-free and vegetarian options. During the COVID closures, Ming Dynasty focused its efforts on takeout, having to close the dinin…

I grew up in a family of cookers and bakers and was taught at an early age how to cook and bake items such as cakes and cookies, how to braise meats, cook pasta, casseroles and how to create easy sauces and dressings. I was taught that if you added a little bit of this with a sprinkle of tha…

Today I am reminded of the words my mother used to say every time a disaster or new virus occurred, “this too shall pass.” Because of COVID-19, people are unable to hug or shake hands, as they practice social distancing. Many with compromised immune systems, including the elderly are staying…

While most of us are sound asleep at 2 a.m., two talented bakers are starting the bread- and dessert-making process at locally owned and operated Great Harvest Bread Company located, 2803 S. Evans St.

Greenville is home to hundreds of restaurants offering up a variety of culinary adventures to satisfy our taste buds. Sushi is at the top of many people’s food pyramid. Health enthusiasts, seafood lovers and foodies with fearsome palates seek and find sushi, made with cold rice dressed with …

Jazz is a musical style that has the ability to change the way we feel, with a hypnotic central rhythm that builds and expands from the first chord. Many people ask, “What is Jazz?” The great Louis Armstrong responded by saying “If you have to ask, you’ll never know.” This same quote graces …

There are thousands of ways to say I love you. You can say it in a different language like in French (Je t’aime), Spanish (Te amo) or say it in Mandarin Chinese (Wo ai ni). You can give gifts showing how much you love someone or share an experience like going on a date to create memories. I …

You have probably already figured out that I love to eat, but food is so much more than ingredients and flavors feeding our bellies. Sometimes we seek flavor, and other times, we seek memories. We search for a restaurant to bring us back to our past. Maybe a dish reminds you of your grandmot…

Today, many of us celebrate the magic and wonder of Christmas. We join family and friends, exchange gifts, share prayers and meals together. I am reminded how lucky I am to a roof over my head and food to eat. I have never wondered where my next meal will come from or where I’m going to slee…

If you’ve lived in Greenville long enough, you tend to know where all the best food joints are. Some are nested in strip malls or on lonely country roads, and some hug the sides of busy intersections. This leads me to my next Hot Dish destination, Abrams BBQ & Chicken at 1001 S. Memorial…

Some of my fondest holiday memories revolve around big dining room tables filled with hearty, colorful dishes including meats, salads, an array of mouthwatering sides and family and friends. This is also the time of the year when we get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of gift giving and …
