I don’t know about you, but my life passed “busy” 15 exits ago. It seems that there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done. My life can get so hectic that I don’t always eat healthy. I tend to eat a lot of fast food or choose lunch and dinner options that don’t offer up enough healthy benefits and they tend to leave me more hungry and tired than satisfied. I would like to say that my fast-paced lifestyle will get better, but such is life and I know I need to find a way to eat healthy even if the world keeps moving like a bowling ball down an alley way of life. This is where Carryout by Chrislyn comes in.

Located in Washington, N.C, this charming foodery is a mainstay in the community. Refrigerators, a deli unit and a freezer hold healthy, carryout meals that have nourishing, satisfying and ease written all over them. You won’t find anything processed or deep fried, just fresh made-from-scratch options sure to make your belly happy.

Located at 128 E. Second St. a few blocks over from the waterfront, Carryout resides in a quaint and nostalgic late 1800s yellow farmhouse complete with an 1889 double-sided brick fireplace and walls and shelves decorated with antique cooking utensils and cookbooks. A little bell chimes to welcome visitors. Wafts of chicken pastry and a hint of butter fills the air.

Carryout has been open for almost three years and in that time Chrislyn and Mike Wedderien have grown their following by providing an abundance of food that keeps them coming back again. The foodery uses all fresh ingredients that Grandma used; nothing is processed. Chicken is boiled to make stock to create sauces, soups and gravies. Fresh fruits and vegetables are used in each dish to provide a delicious experience.

Chrislyn can create and customize meals to accommodate the traditional eater to the more adventurous. Chrislyn says the food they make is “is what we serve our family and friends and we are proud of it. It is made from fresh ingredients that Grandma would have used.” They even go above and beyond to help the community in times of need. After Hurricane Florence, they served over 13,000 meals, and Chrislyn received the N.C. Governor's Volunteerism award.

Christlyn has created three carryout options that offer six to 30-plus meals. The first option is Chrislyn’s Carryout For You for only $49. This is the perfect option for couples or single people who want a lot of choices to get them through the week. Choose two entrees, four sides, one casserole, one half-pint of chicken salad, one half-pint of pasta salad and salad or potato salad for two days. Entrees choices include chicken caprese or Marsala, cilantro lime chicken, hamburger steak, roasted pork lion with apples and onions, or chicken cordon blue just to name a few. A few of the sides include macaroni and cheese, roasted beets, brown rice fiesta and other yummy options. Casserole options include buffalo chicken casserole, bacon ranch, crazy Italian, chicken casserole, etc. Or create your own package by shopping their refrigerators and freezers.

I sampled the hamburger steak topped with grilled peppers and onions drizzled with a savory gravy paired with southern style string beans, and mashed potatoes topped with gravy. It was hearty, tasty and filling. The green beans were enjoyable and the mashed potatoes were clean and flavorful topped with a rich gravy. It was a shame I had to share the meal for dinner but that is the joy of this meal, there is enough for the family.

The second meal is called Chrislyn’s Carryout for Two for $89. You can pick two entrees of your choice that will have two servings each, four pints of sides, one casserole, one half-pint of chicken salad, a half-pint of your favorite style of pimento cheese, as well as a half-pint of pasta salad, and salad or potato salad for two for two days. This option has 12 meals of food and can feed a family of four or a family of two for several days.

For this option, I tried the Hawaiian chicken casserole which is grilled chicken mixed and sliced pineapple mixed with al dente rice in a sweet teriyaki glaze. After that, I tried the roasted pork loin topped with sliced sauteed apples and onions paired with baked sweet potatoes and a beautiful mixed veggie dish of sauteed Brussel sprouts mixed with cranberries. The pork was juicy and tender and sweet apples paired with savory onions is a perfect filling autumn dish along with the bright veggie medley and smooth, warming sweet potatoes. This option is a perfect gift for a friend who has lost a loved one or needs a little kindness.

The last and larger carryout option is called Carry Chrislyn to the Beach for only $199. This option has over 30 meals and includes three entrees with four servings each, six quarts of sides, one half-pan of casserole, one pint of their famous chicken salad, one pint of pasta salad, Mamasita chips, salsa pint, salad for eight with dressings, sausage balls, and quiche. You can add-on additional items to each of the carryout packages to create a carryout meal that has your family tastes and flavors written all over it. For each of the carryout choices above, they only need a four-hour window to prepare them and the food has a six day shelf life giving you back your valuable time.

Carryout by Chrislyn does not just provide food you can bring home to make but can cater your next special event. Catering for them is a passion. “Our catering ranges from in home small private dinner parties for six to self service pre-plattered foods to delivered catering with attendants to full service china/glassware/silverware. We work within all of our client’s budgets and needs. We do not have a set catering menu with pricing because we like to sit down with our clients and discuss what their needs are,” Chrislyn says.
