Detectives with the Greenville Police Department's Major Crimes Unit are investigating a suspicious death.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, Greenville Fire-Rescue were dispatched to a gas leak at 504 B Roundtree Drive, according to a police department news release.

When fire-rescue personnel arrived, they discovered 70-year-old Leonard Shackleford Sr. dead inside the residence and they alerted Greenville Police.

Detectives are waiting for an official ruling from the Pitt County Medical Examiner's Office, the release stated. However, evidence located at the scene leads detectives to believe the death is suspicious in nature and, therefore, they are treating it as a homicide.

Anyone who may have had contact with Shackleford in recent days is asked to contact Detective Verdin at 329-4300.
