An Ayden man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly assaulted and seriously injured another man in a parking lot on 10th Street.

An incident report said the assault took place at 9 a.m. in the 1300 block of East 10th Street. Greenville police said that the victim, a 32-year-old resident of an apartment complex on that block, had been hit with a blunt object.

The victim reported being hit with a hammer by Jonathan Chestnutt, 31, of 4347 Eastern Ave., Ayden. Chestnutt and the victim have had ongoing disputes over a woman, the report said.

The assault caused a major injury, according to the report Greenville police said that the victim was able to drive himself to the hospital and that he is expected to recover.

The victim’s prescription glasses, valued at $100, were damaged during the assault and there was minor damage to a nearby vehicle not belonging to the victim, the report said.

Chestnutt was arrested on Monday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was also charged with injury to real property. He is being held at the Pitt County Detention Center without bond. Chestnutt was arrested earlier this year and sentenced to probation for communicating threats in June.
