A 40-year-old Washington, N.C., man was shot and killed by his younger brother outside a mobile home in the Bells Fork area on Thursday, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Maurice Demetris Simpson, 40, died of a gunshot would to his chest, according to a news release from the department. He was a few days shy of his 41st birthday.

Simpson’s brother, Marcus Dorrell Mackey, 35, was arrested at the scene, the news release said. His address was listed as 907 Willow St., Washington.

Mackey was arraigned in the Pitt County Detention Center courtroom Friday morning. He was distraught during the appearance, according to accounts from WNCT and WITN.

Deputies responded to the residence at 3090 Bells Fork Road about 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. They found Simpson dead outside.

Mackey was charged with an open count of murder and jailed Thursday night. He given a $2 million secured bond during his court appearance.
