Blood donation center

The American Red Cross Donation Center, 700 Cromwell Drive, is open 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. It is also open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Blood donors are needed. Museum hours

The Winterville Historical and Arts Society membership meeting will be held at 3 p.m. at the Winterville Depot, 217 Worthington St. in Winterville. Coming up 

Preservation series 

The NC Cooperative Extension Service in Pitt County will host its 2019 Food Preservation Series from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the extension center in Greenville, 403 Government Circle. These classes will teach residents how to preserve food safely. The first class will be focused on water-bath canning-jams, and classes will continue throughout the summer on Aug. 13 and Sept. 14. The registration fee is $20 per class. Class size is limited, so call 252-902-1709 to reserve a spot at least two days before the class.

Council on Aging events 

■ The Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program will sponsor a Virtual Dementia Tour from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 24 at the Council on Aging, 4551 County Home Road. This event requires an appointment which can be made at 252-752-1717, ext. 201. 

■ "A Matter of Balance," an award-winning program to help prevent and manage falls, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays from July 29 to August 21 in the Multipurpose Room of at CM Eppes Recreation Center, 400 Nash St. Anyone concerned about falls or interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength should attend this free event to learn practical strategies for preventing falls. Funding available

The deadline for public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for emergency food and shelter program funds is 5 p.m. on August 2. The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Emergency Food and Shelter Program has appropriated $90,677 for use by emergency food and shelter services in Pitt County. Spring Fling grants

Spring Fling 2020 applications to receive grants are available on the St. James United Methodist Church website, Eligible organizations are those that can document their status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit group and those that provide one of the following: services to the sick, elderly, homeless, and other special population groups to improve the lives of women, men, and children; aid and assistance to religious institutions and spiritual causes; other worthy purposes that the Application Review Committee deems to be in keeping with the mission statement of St. James United Methodist Church. The deadline for applications is August 30th, and next year's Spring Fling will be held April 25.
