A man on the run from authorities in Long Island, N.Y., broke into a car at a home in Bethel on Sunday night, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The break-in occurred about 8 p.m. at 6487 N.C. 11 North. A caller reporting the crime provided dispatchers with a description of the man.

While searching the area, deputies located a man matching the description and arrested Michael Gaines, 42, of 1308 B. Maple St., Goldsboro.

He was charged with felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and was booked into the Pitt County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.

While he was at the jail, a deputy discovered that Gaines was being sought in connection to the Aug. 16 shooting death of a man on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Long Island.

As a result, Gaines was served with a fugitive warrant for a parole violation which should lead to extradition to New York, a news release said.

Gaines’ bond was revoked and he remains in the Pitt County Detention Center, the release said.
