The Leroy James Farmers Market is holding its third annual card decorating contest to brighten the season for local senior citizens.

Anyone may order blank cards at no charge through Dec. 5 by emailing market manager LaRita Johnson They will be available for pick up at the market at 4560 County Home Road between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Contestants are asked to decorate at least one of the cards festively for the season, include a special message inside to a senior citizen, and return it to the market by Dec. 11-12. The cards will be delivered to seniors by the Pitt County Meals on Wheels program.

Market staff will judge entries before they are delivered according to originality, ingenious use of inexpensive materials, quality of the work, suitability of the title and quality of the work in light of the participant’s age.

Results will be announced Dec. 18 with a $20 gift card to Simply Natural Creamery going to first place, an $10 and $5 Simply Natural cards going to second and third place.

Decorated cards can have items glued, colored or painted. Johnson suggested using acrylic paint and adding sparkles, feathers or sequins with glue.

Decorate the front of your card and be sure to put a special holiday wish inside, she said.

Two entries are allowed per person. “Spread the word to the whole family, so all can share in the fun,” Johnson said.
