A Greenville man charged with driving while impaired allegedly pulled out in front of another vehicle, was struck and taken to the hospital with evident injuries according to Pitt County court records and a Greenville Police Department crash report.

Darvin Senetell Pope, 40, address unavailable, was stopped at 8:05 a.m. on Nov. 15 near Ms. Paul Lane and Southwest Greenville Boulevard by the Greenville Police Department.

According to the crash report, Pope was traveling east on Ms. Paul Lane in a 2004 Honda van when he attempted a right turn onto Southwest Greenville Boulevard and pulled in front of a westbound 2005 GMC SUV being driven by Linwood Latham of 2484 Pine Tops Drive, Winterville.

At the time of the impact, Latham’s vehicle was going 35 mph and Pope’s vehicle was going 10 mph. The authorized speed limit is 50 mph.

Latham, who was not injured in the crash, told the officer that Pope pulled out in front of him and that he had no time to stop. Pope, who was taken to Vidant Medical Center, told the officer he was not sure what happened and did not want to tell him anything. The officer noted that the hospital room Pope was in smelled of alcohol and that Pope seemed to be unaware of his surroundings.

According to Pope’s case file, Pope admitted to drinking alcohol and being high. He also had red, glassy eyes, did not where he was and seemed forgetful, the file said.

Pope’s vehicle sustained $4,500 in estimated damages and Latham’s vehicle sustained an estimated $3,500 in damages.
