Carolyn Allen Garris

GREENVILLE - Mrs. Carolyn Allen Garris, 78, passed away at her home Monday, January 10, 2022.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, officiated by her pastor, Rev. Jeff Manning. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until 3:15 PM at the funeral home.

Carolyn, a native and lifelong resident of Pitt County, was a daughter of the late Dewey Wallace and Alma Worthington Allen. After her high school graduation, she attended Bob Jones University completing a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She returned to eastern North Carolina to live and began teaching at Goldsboro Christian Academy. Through the years she also taught at Greenville Christian Academy, Eastern Elementary, W. H. Robinson and Falkland Elementary Schools. In 1978 she completed a Masters in Library Science at East Carolina University and later joined the staff at D.H. Conley High School as a librarian, working at Conley for 14 years prior to her retirement in 1996.

Carolyn loved doing for others. She would always put others before herself. She was a great teacher and enjoyed working with young people and seeing them learn and grow. Her most rewarding teaching experience was seeing first graders grasp a concept and seeing the expression of success on their faces.

Carolyn was a longtime member of Maranatha Free Will Baptist Church and was currently a member of Unity FWB Church. Through her many years of church work she had worked with youth and adult choirs, directed plays, served as pianist, as well as teaching Sunday School and was a great partner with her husband, who taught a young couples class.

Carolyn enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. She and her husband traveled to all fifty states. She especially enjoyed her trips to New England and Alaska with some dear friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed having friends and family over for meals.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene A. Haddock and a brother, Kenneth Allen.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jimmy Garris; step-daughter, Drs. Janie Garris Hallstrand and husband Teal of Seattle, WA; step-son, Joel Jimmy Garris and wife Stephanie of Orlando, FL; and grandchildren, Nelson, Ethan, and Connor Garris and Erik and Andrew Hallstrand.

The family would like to thank Vidant Hospice Care for the love and attention they gave Carolyn and the great support they were to her family. A very special thanks for Betty Hartley, who was her caregiver and friend for the past seven years. Betty was always there for her and was quick to do whatever was needed. She is loved by Carolyn and her family and became a part of her family. The appreciation will never be forgotten! Memorials may be made to Unity FWB Church Building Fund, 4301 Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
