Loys Ormond Turnage Sumrell

AYDEN - The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. (Psalms 16:6)

Loys Ormond Turnage Sumrell, age 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, November 12, 2020 at Spring Arbor Assistant Living of Greenville.

Born in Ayden, NC on July 24, 1921 to Ralph Leroy Turnage, Sn. and Pattie Eleanor (Bonnie) Ormond Turnage. Loys was a graduate of Ayden High School, attended Peace College, East Carolina Teacher College (ECU), and Watt School of Nursing. Singing was a big part of her life. She was a member of the Ayden Symphonic Chorus group which toured and travelled across the country giving concerts. They performed at The White House for Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, New York City, and West Minister College in Princeton.

In April of 1944 Loys married First Lt. Hubert L. Veasey. He was killed during a combat mission over Germany in November of the same year. She returned home from Durham to be with her father and to assist managing and buyer for The Roy L. Turnage Department Store.

She later married Joseph Grayson Sumrell of Ayden in 1947. Several years they both owned Joe Sumrell Department store. While raising her family she worked as the secretary of Ayden Elementary School for 16 years. After retiring from the school system, she joined her husband in their Sumrell Country Sausage business.

The Ayden United Methodist Church was always a large part of Loys' life. She was a devoted life-time member serving as Sunday school teacher, choir member, and other capacities that she was asked to do. In her social life, she was involved in her family activities, LaBonne Heure Book Club, bridge clubs, Dutch Treat Club, and volunteered her time at Greenville Hospital.

Loys loved vacationing at Kure Beach and Lake Junaluska, puzzles, reading and cooking new recipes. Her greatest joy in life was found in her family and the many deep friendships she developed and maintained over the years. Loys maintained a deep love for the Ayden United Methodist Church and the belief in its resilience. Her wit, humor and caring spirit will be missed by so many.
