NEW YORK — Day’Ron Sharpe probably wasn’t surprised to hear his name called at Thursday night’s NBA Draft.

Moses Tufts was the leading scorer and go-to player for the South Central High School boys’ basketball team, which enjoyed a clean 13-0 regular season before COVID-19 protocols caused the team to forfeit in the first round of the state playoffs.

One of the final moments for Alexis Hastings as a multi-sport standout at South Central High School was one of her most significant, when she won the triple jump event at the 4A track and field state championship meet. She took first place with a mark of 37 feet, 9 inches.

After winning 3A state championship most outstanding female swimmer as a sophomore and most recently securing two more state titles her junior year, Madeline Smith has one more school year to rack up medals and records as a J.H. Rose High School swimmer.

Kevin Hamilton was one of the athletes who shined frequently during the COVID-19-altered scholastic sports calendar, excelling for J.H. Rose High School in basketball and football as those seasons nearly overlapped in February.

Former Farmville Central High School standout Terquavion Smith, who already has moved to Raleigh as a freshman summer enrollee at N.C. State, racked up 30 points to earn Most Valuable Player honors Monday night at the East-West NC Coaches Association All-Star basketball game in Greensboro.

Dixon Williams provided a lot of memorable moments for the D.H. Conley baseball team this season, including a scoreless inning of relief and a walk-off home run in the third round of the state 3A playoffs.

Kelly Tripp just completed her sophomore year for the Chargers, where she was a top player in basketball (10 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds per game) and regional winner and state qualifier in the state track championship meet.

Alphonso ‘Vito’ Boyd was a four-sport athlete for four years at Ayden-Grifton, where he played basketball, was an all-conference lineman in football, a regional standout in track and a regional champion and state qualifier in wrestling.
