LA GRANGE — A husband and wife entrepreneurial team is opening an event center they think will be a Wise Choice for folks in Greene County to host parties and receptions.
Ronda and Maurice Wise have converted 2000-square feet in a shopping center on U.S. 258 South into one of the county’s only event centers. The grand opening celebration for Wise Choice Events Center on Saturday also will include openings for Cohills Florist & Things and EMD Community Thrift Store — businesses Ronda recruited to the center.
“I felt like Greene County needed a safe place to be able to host events, whether it’s a baby shower, wedding reception or birthday party,” Ronda said.
The couple began the business began in Greenville in 2017, but Ronda, a Greene County native, wanted to bring her services back home. In addition to providing a venue, the staff at Wise Choice plans events and provides services to make them a success, Ronda said.
“We offer designing services, floral, DJ services, catering options and many more services to customize each event based on the client needs,” she said. “They can pay one price and get everything they need.”
The new facility offers a ballroom, restrooms and VIP area with a private restroom.
“My hope is to bring an atmosphere here to Greene County where residents can feel the ability to have an upscale environment to bring their guests to and they can use my center,” Rhonda said.
Wise also offers free weekly educational classes and wants her business to be a place of support for the community, she said.
“We’re really big on entrepreneurship and on how to start a business from getting the finances to permitting. It’s important to share with people,” she said.
At 31, she thinks others in her age group and background could benefit and excel with additional educational opportunities.
“I want them to know you have the leadership qualities to do whatever you want to do and you do not have to settle for just working nine to five.”
Though offering classes prior to the pandemic, Ronda became aware of how important these skills could be following the pandemic, she said.
“The pandemic taught us a lot in regard to leadership skills. When COVID-19 hit, a lot of jobs closed down. People really had to do whatever they had to do to make a dollar. It was the perfect opportunity to start a businesses,” she said.
Saturday’s event begins at 2 p.m. and will include a variety of vendors, free food and fun for the whole family, she said.
She said all the businesses are owned by African Americans.
“I was riding around Greene County and I knew I had to find a place. I saw the for rent sign on the building and called the owner,” Ronda said, adding she soon learned her location and the two neighboring locations were all available.
“I told him I wanted to rent the entire thing because I knew other business owners who want to expand their businesses and Greene County is the perfect place to do it.”
